Democrats dismayed by Siegelman sentence
The former governor of Alabama and the former CEO of HealthSouth were both sentenced to 6+ years in prison for their collusion in fraud and bribery. Since the governor is a Democrat and was previously exonerated in a Federal corporate fraud trial, some people are claiming the involvement of Karl Rove and his gang.
Regardless of who was responsible, I am glad to see that we are getting serious about corruption. In addition to the expeditionary imperialism, blind nationalism and cultural malaise that has destroyed every empire on Earth, the most immediate threat to our liberty is the corruption that exists in the synergy between corporations and government.
When a young couple gets in debt over their heads, they lose the freedom to make certain choices. It destroys many marriages, insidiously, by shackling people and forcing them into despair. Consumer lending has grown into a malicious, seductive Medusa, luring in the susceptible with promises of a life like in the pages of a magazine, then ruining their hopes when they can't make the payments.
And so it is as a citizen in a corrupt government. We are lied to by a system of our own making, a marriage, if you will, that binds us in a union of mutual trust and respect. But when we are lied to, deceived by those who have promised to protect us, employ us, empower our futures, we are enslaved as surely as an indentured servant. Our choices have been taken away, not through fascist rule, but by emptying our pockets.
In the news story, the business man gave the governor a $500,000 bribe to secure a job for himself. Where did that $500,000 come from? The pockets of the (so-called) insured. Where did that money not end up? As an insurance check, paying the bills of the sick and dying.

From the story:
The penalties have increased as the perception of the seriousness of government corruption has increased. The courts are showing less tolerance in these cases," said Greg Wallance, an attorney specializing in white collar crime with the Kaye Scholer law firm in New York City.In China and many other "non-Western" nations, they execute top officials for corruption, taking food out of the mouths of citizens, taking money from their pockets. If we will put a man to death for taking a single life, is that penalty not appropriate for someone put in a position of trust who destroys our society from within?
